FALL MUSIC PROGRAMS 🛢️🎶⁠ ⁠ Beginner St FALL MUSIC PROGRAMS 🛢️🎶⁠
⁠
Beginner Steel Pan Lessons:⁠
A Beginner Steel Pan class for those who have never played Steel Pan before. The Steel Pan program is cross-generational which invites both youth and seniors to learn the art of Steel Pan. Improve concentration and memory while socializing and having fun! Class are 1 hour for 11 sessions on Sundays and include a Saturday dress rehearsal and a Recital at the end.⁠

Parang Ensemble:⁠
Parang is a popular folk music which originated in Trinidad and Tobago and is practiced throughout the Caribbean. Our classes give participants the opportunity to learn to play the ukulele, cuatro, guitar or selection of percussion instruments. Classes are 2 hours for 7 sessions on Sundays and include a Saturday dress rehearsal and a Recital at the end.⁠
Minimum age requirement 15+⁠

We had many events to celebrate Emancipation Day and engaged with hundreds of community members over the long weekend. Thank you to everyone who joined us and made our events a success!⁠

On August 3, we explored Oakville's rich history with our Black History Bike and Walking Tours through Bronte and Kerr. Thank you to the Oakville Museum and Oakville Public Library for partnering with us. And a big thank you to the Bronte Historical Society and the Oakville Historical Society for sharing in their knowledge and helping CCAH to ensure that this important history is not forgotten. ⁠

On August 4 we celebrated Emancipation Day with our annual picnic in partnership with the Town of Oakville and Oakville Museum. We had African Drumming by the wonderful Babarinde Williams, Storytelling by Kesha Christie and face painting to keep the little ones busy. Come celebrate the legacy of Veronica Tyrrell. She was a longstanding president of the CCAH until her passing in 2018, and an exemplary community leader who was committed to fostering inclusivity, acceptance and social change. This is a family event celebrating cultural diversity in our community. ⁠

🔸WHEREAS, Oakville served as a key destination on the Underground Railroad, hosting abolitionists and freedom seekers; and ⁠

🔸WHEREAS, Emancipation celebrations in Oakville date back to the late 1850’s highlighting a tradition of freedom and human dignity; and ⁠
⁠
🔸WHEREAS, August 1 is officially recognized as Emancipation Day in Canada, reflecting on equality, freedom, and the contributions of Black Canadians; and ⁠
⁠
🔸WHEREAS, the Town of Oakville commits to recognizing the rights, freedoms, and contributions of all its citizens; and ⁠
⁠
🔸WHEREAS, Emancipation Day in Oakville is held on the first Monday in August in recognition of the struggle for human rights and, freedoms of all citizens while offering reflection, education, and celebration. ⁠
